Salmon Portland Chase

I have more or less settled on my next subject:  Salmon Portland Chase.  Unfortunately, my agent and I were not able to reach an agreement on this book project with Simon & Schuster.  So I am working to write a longer form version of the Chase proposal, for my agent to circulate among editors in New York City.  But I have done enough work on Chase, hundreds of pages of notes already, that I want to tackle Chase before moving on to some other subject.  The prior biographies of Chase are not very good; they do not attempt to deal with his financial work, as Secretary of the Treasury, or his legal work, as Chief Justice of the United States.  And even as political history, the prior books have problems.  They mention, for example, that he went out on the campaign trail for Abraham Lincoln in 1860, but they do not tell you where Chase went or what he said.
